What is better overlock or carpet

Due to the rapid scientific and technological progress, a huge selection of sewing equipment is now presented on the modern sewing market. Often, even professionals are lost among all this diversity. Of particular popularity among various sewing devices are now 2 devices: overlock and carpet. Their names are almost identical, however, despite this, this sewing technique differs in the areas of their application.

The purpose of overlock and carpet

Overlock is a highly specialized device for sewing, the main purpose of which is to process and trim the edges of the fabric of products from bulk textile materials. The principle of operation of this device depends on the number of threads used. The most popular is a three-thread stitching seam. When it is performed, the tissue is pierced by a needle, after which the needle begins to return, above which there is a loop above the ear. As the needle moves, the lower looper moves from left to right. The upper looper at the same time moves in the reverse order. The threads laid by the loopers are fixed with a sliding needle, and a mark is formed at the same time. The converter, outwardly resembling a small iron bracket, is responsible for the quality of the seam in the overlock.

ATTENTION! Overlocks in which you can turn the converter on and off, depending on the need, are most comfortable in operation.

Coverlock is a mechanism that combines the functions of an overlock and a flat-seam stitching machine. This is an indispensable assistant when working with knit fabric. The main functions of the carpet:

  • grinding of tissue sections;
  • the formation of a flat stitch seam;
  • making a seam and seam.

Koverlok sews product details with a chain stitch. A similar line is made in two threads. It can stretch without damage and return to its original state. Professional seamstresses use devices of this type almost daily.

Comparison of overlock and carpet

Despite the obvious similarities between the names of these devices, there are much more differences between them than it might seem at first glance.

Functions

Overlock wraps the fabric with sufficient quality. Coverlock copes with such a task no less worthily, but at the same time, this device can connect fabrics together without trimming. He can grind and slap at the same time.

Thread refill

To replace the threads in the overlock, just cut the old ones and install new spools. There is no need to retune the internal mechanism. Certain models of overlock even provide for threading in automatic mode, which greatly simplifies the process of working with this device.

Coverlock is not so convenient in this regard. If you need to change the line, you will have to carefully read the instructions, delve into the machine and carefully examine its internal mechanism to understand where the mode switches are located. If the setting is not performed correctly, a quality line with a carpet cannot be made.

Complexity of operation

In terms of operation, overlock is much simpler than a carpet. It has in its functionality not so many additional lines. Their main task is the processing of the edge, therefore, they differ only in the peculiarities of weaving and the number of threads.

On the contrary, you can make about 20 different seams on the carpet. And these are not only seams aimed at wrapping tissue sections, but also more complex ones - connecting seams consisting of five or more threads. To work with this device, you will need more skills related to tuning and refilling.

Number of coils

Most often there are two-thread overlocks. This is the most affordable model, which is distinguished by an acceptable cost. In general, an overlock can have from two to five working threads.

REFERENCE! A three-thread stitch seam is used to process the edges of bulk fabrics, as well as to stitch knitted fabrics with simultaneous processing of the cut.

The possibilities of the carpet are much wider. This device can have up to ten working threads. This allows you to perform many decorative seams using such a device.

Number of loopers

The looper is a pointed metal part that resembles a hook with an eye for threading. It performs certain cyclic movements to capture the needle thread in the process of performing a complex chain stitch. The more loopers are in the device, the more sewing operations it is able to perform.Overlock has only two loopers. Overlock also has three, two of which perform overlock functions.

Versatility

If the sewing device is necessary only for wrapping fabric sections, there is no need to spend money on a carpet, which has a high cost. In addition, it is more bulky. An overlock will do just fine with such work.

If you often have to sew products from knitted fabric, it is more advisable to purchase carpet for work. Depending on the model, such a device can be equipped with many useful auxiliary features for more comfortable work. It can be:

  • additional table;
  • touch screen;
  • waste container.

But to emphasize precisely this difference is not recommended, since the more options there are in the device, the more difficult will be its internal system, and therefore the unit’s setup.

When choosing the optimal device, it is necessary to be based on personal preferences, tasks and financial capabilities. A large number of various functions in combination with high cost or a device with limited functionality at an affordable price is up to the buyer to decide.
