How to glue a wooden chair

Wooden furniture, in particular chairs, is an element that complements the interior of probably most of the living quarters. Many of them are not only functional, but also have an aesthetic appearance. Unfortunately, wooden products, unlike those made of artificial materials, consist of a large number of elements and tend to become loose, begin to creak or even fall apart. Do not rush to get rid of them and send them to a landfill. Often, in order to repair and continue to use your favorite chair, you will need only glue and a couple of simple tools.

Types and characteristics of glue: which one to choose

The most important characteristic when choosing glue is the strength and durability of the connection, it is this factor that should be guided in the first place. It is also worth paying attention to toxicity (especially if there are children in the house), resistance to environmental influences and the presence of traces after treatment. The appearance of the product may be corrupted by improperly selected glue.

Several types of glue are used to connect wooden furniture parts, the most popular of them:

1. PVA (polyvinyl acetate), and others based on it. It is time-tested, reliable, completely non-toxic and environmentally friendly. The advantages can also include low cost availability, lack of need for special training before use.
2. Synthetic adhesive is characterized by increased resistance to physical stress, exposure to chemicals and liquids. Its disadvantage is a very long preparation process before application (about a day before dissolution).
3. BP is characterized by excellent moisture resistance and resistance to low temperatures. Drying time is about 1 hour, which makes working with it more convenient. The disadvantages include poor bonding of non-fat and poorly treated surfaces.
4. Epoxy adhesive has a very high bond strength and resistance to a wide range of aggressive reagents. It is good because it has high versatility and can be used a lot where in everyday life. A small drawback is the increased consumption (it may not be all consumed, and after mixing the components cannot be stored).
5. Polyurethane adhesive is better than others to cope with dynamic loads. It tolerates the effects of the environment and chemicals.

REFERENCE!As a substitute for expensive polyurethane, you can use ordinary mounting foam. To do this, you first need to knock it with a solid object, for example, a spatula, to get rid of air bubbles. The connection made with it will be very durable and able to withstand huge loads.

Leg sizing and full repair

After you have decided on the choice of glue, you should make sure that you have the necessary tool. It has far from the last effect on the strength and durability of the connection. For a successful repair you will need:

1. Sandpaper, sharp knife, chisel. Used to remove residual old glue, stripping off grease and preparing the connection legs, or other parts.
2. Hammer. It will be required for reliable and tight driving of the tenon into the groove. It is important that it is with a rubber nozzle (to avoid damage to the varnished coating).
3. Clamps. To tighten the parts firmly. The most densely pressed glued parts of the chair are not the last important element of a successful repair. In some cases, belt clamps are perfect.

To tighten parts, it is also possible to use improvised means, for example, ropes or a heavy object.

There are several basic repair steps:

1. First you need to disassemble the chair. Extend the staggering leg and other parts that interfere with convenient access to the damaged joint.
2. Using a knife, chisel and sandpaper, clean the surface of the tenon and groove (trunnion).
3. Lubricate the joint with pre-prepared (if required) adhesive according to the instructions. Install the part in its place.
4. With light blows of a hammer with a rubber nozzle, drive the spike into the groove as far as it will go.
5. Remove squeezed out excess glue from a product. A piece of regular fabric will help.
6. Press in the joint using clamps or improvised tools.
7. Wait for the glue to dry completely according to its instructions.

So with a few simple operations you can give your furniture a new life. This is especially important when you need to glue your favorite chair, which you do not want to replace with a product made of plastic and metal, because high-quality wooden furniture, although it costs much more, is more durable and aesthetically attractive.
