QOS - what is it in the router?

Such a parameter as local network bandwidth is important. With the development of technology and the introduction of more and more gadgets into our lives, we are connecting more and more different devices to the router. But software is not always able to cope with the load placed on it.

QOS in a router - what is it?

A large number of routers on the market are equipped with the necessary equipment to manage traffic flows within the local network. This allows you to prioritize the work of various applications. Perhaps this definition is not clear enough, so let’s look at an example.

Suppose you are playing an online game and downloading a movie with it. Surely you had to deal with the fact that the game starts to hang. What to do in this case? It is necessary to determine which of the actions is more important for you, most likely you will choose a game. Further, when setting up the scheduler, you can set the priority of the game over the movie download. But note that the bandwidth of the local network will still be limited.

The priority, as a rule, is by default given to web surfing, in other words - to the browser. If you want to download a movie through a torrent sooner, then the priority is to assign the program to the file loader. In order to give users the ability to assign priorities, manufacturers have provided for Quality of Service (QoS) in routers.

How to enable qos

There are quite a few different models, they are divided into categories depending on the application. We are talking about the application in the home, as well as the office or larger projects.

Reference! Not every device provides for the presence of the described function, and in those where it is present, the settings can be different.

Some devices can assign only the priority of use between devices, while others allow you to select types of traffic and more. It is difficult to specifically talk about the features of setting up each, but it is possible to single out the main steps that will help to organize the work of QoS in order to achieve the best quality and speed of work on the Internet.

Customization

In order to activate this feature in the router you will need to perform several steps. Define the goal. Before you begin to configure the device, you need to set a specific goal. If we are talking about a home router, then this may be the priority of your PC over other devices that have access to the Internet. At home, you must establish the rules of priority, they should be as simple as possible. If you want to set too many priorities, it can lead to what you get is absolutely not what you expected. Operators use the function for more global purposes, including:

  • Traffic control.
  • Adjustment of the required stable distribution.
  • Quality assurance, as well as the distribution of speed of access to the network for individual customers.
  • Warning of the possibility of network reboots.
  • Reduced Uplink Costs

Despite this difference in purpose, the setting principle is very similar to each other.

Determining the speed of the Internet. For the telecom operator, this parameter is specific and is subsequently divided by a large number of users in relation to their tariff plans. It is this problem that allows to solve QoS. But the speed of the home Internet does not always coincide with that which the provider promises. There may be various reasons for this and it is therefore important to be able to determine the real figure before proceeding with QoS setup. To do this, you will need to stop all programs on your PC. Further use special applications for passing the similar test.

Reference! You can pass the test by going to www.speedtest.net. You will need to convert the speed parameter from “Mbps” to “Kbps”, as the tuning is done in these units. To translate, simply increase the resulting value to 1000.
Activate QoS on the router

It is difficult to bring the inclusion algorithm, since it may differ for each manufacturer and on models. In most cases, you will need to go to the page where the setting is made, to do this, enter its address in the search engine. Next, enter the username and password that you specified in the instructions. Go to the NAT section of the network settings, and accordingly the QoS tab. Now specify the parameters you need.
